Many people opposed to it, because they do not perceive opportunities that provides that feature or they believe that graphics are somehow affect at gameplay.
At my mind there is no fundamental difference between 2D and pseudo3D in games with correct TOP DOWN view, especially in terms of targeting in your opponents - so in this way top down 2D game with simulated 3D features may be compared with early FPS games with pseudo-3D first-person perspective. Like as - Complex, DOOM, DOOM 2, ... .
As you can see in these FPS is conditionally vertical and horisontal aiming/targeting - same it is in CS2D.
Most significantly, the Doom engine and its levels are not truly three-dimensional; they are internally represented on a single plane, with height differences stored separately as displacements (a similar technique is still used in many games to create expansive outdoor environments).
This is especially can be seen on the example of existing games with such properties - for example like as Bloodmasters game
Additionaly same of these pseudo 3D technologies are used in many top down games for example like as Red Zone, GTA, GTA(London 1969), GTA2 and so on.
As far as I know at this moment SQ is working on adding in CS2D properly working lights and shadows engine. Also recently it revealed that it is possible to connect graphics libraries and shaders(like as adding ENB dlls).
So many graphical technologies can be used in CS2D without changes or damage for gameplay.
СS2D is where to grow on its own way in terms of gameplay, and also definitely worth paying attention to the similar style games(Sometimes it makes no sense to "reinvent wheel" again).
At my mind gameplay in CS2D can be improved by adding features and effects shown in these videos:

Video links are provided to trailers of singleplayer games, but nothing prevents add similar features and effects in CS2D.
