I don't get why you want to use Mono Develop because it's bugged crap (just my opinion) but you can do it. Also it doesn't support Lua highlighting out of the box so it's quite pointless.

There seem to be Add-Ins for that though:

I case you want to hear an advice from a happy user:
Notepad++ is probably a much better choice because
√ Lua highlighting out of the box
√ much smaller download
√ much lighter and faster
√ more stable
